What really matters?

If your house was on fire, what would you take with you?

A new blog, The Burning House, asks people all around the world to take photos of their answers to this question. Here are some of my favorites:

If your house was burning, you would take the things that really matter. So why do spend so much time and money on the things that don't?

  2. Love the dog in the suitcase.

I would grab my family first of course, but then I think as many of my scrapbooks and pictures as I could carry. Not sure after that.

Good thing to think about in sorting through priorities.

  3. With all of the flooding in my area (SW Iowa) and all of the people being forced to evacuate their homes, this has been on my mind a lot lately!
As long as my boyfriend and our dog got out safely, that is really all that matters.
If I had a little more time like the flood victims, my scrapbooks, photos and computers would go as well.
It really does make you think of what's really important!

  4. Ahhh... I love this! Going to check out that blog right now. I really don't think I would feel the need to take anything more than my kids and my dog, but I guess you never know until you are in a situation. http://orangiesattic.blogspot.com/

  5. Definitely my Grandma's quilt and the book I write all my kids' milestones in. Not too much else.

  7. I was surprised at how many dogs-in-suitcases there were on the blog!

It would definitely depend on how much time you had to get out, too. It just always hits me after disasters when I hear people say "It's just stuff" and they truly mean it.

  8. Hey, I'm your newest follower, found you on Etsy! This is an awesome post - I actually don't know what I'd take other than family. Something to think about, I guess.

  9. I have often thought about this since I watched my neighbor's house burn to the ground about 12 years ago. If you would have asked me this back then I would have said, kids, pets, family photos. Now I have no kids at home so I don't have to save them. I back up all my photos (including the scanned images of older ones) and other computer files online so I don't need to save them.

So I would save my 2 pets FIRST and IF I HAD TIME I'd grab my purse because it does have my phone, wallet, tablet pc, and digital camera.

Everything else can be recoved via my home owner's insurance policy.

Now, if I had time say because a wildfire was coming, or flood, I would grab my laptop, some clothes, jewelry, and a few other personal items.

    Great post!

  10. It is amazing what you find you really care for and miss and what is just junk filling up your house. We're in a bit of a strange moving situation right now where most of my things have been tucked away in a storage unit for 2 months. It's amazing, I've maybe missed about 10 items out of the whole lot!

It's funny how you think something is special or you absolutely need it, and then you don't miss it or manage to get by without it. I won't deny, things are nice, but they are just things.

Still, if I ever had to choose the things to take with me after all living creatures were safe, I would pick my original art pieces, and any rare books or DVDs I own.
